Sports Massage

Sports Massage

Massage is recorded as one of the earliest forms of physical therapy and was used over 3000 years ago in China, India and Greece. The popularity of sports massage has continued to grow as a form of treatment ever since.

What is Sports Massage?

Sports Massage involves the manipulation of soft tissue in order to loosen tightened connective tissue. This is great form of treatment for people who struggle with muscular tension.

The massage is designed to focus on stiff and tight muscles, assisting in correcting the imbalances in soft tissue that are caused from repetitive and strenuous physical activity, and trauma. Massage breaks up adhesions formed within the muscle, which increases tissue mobility, and frees up movement within the body. Regular sports massage, prior to and after exercise, has shown to enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury.

When should I get sports massage?

Everybody is different as to when they like and feel they benefit from sports massage. Generally getting sports massage throughout your training maintains good muscle function and corrects any tissue dysfunction throughout your training programme.

I find massage is really useful for me at least 2 days before a match or training. Having it the day before a big race, or competition can give you some muscle soreness following your treatment, but this can be catered to what you require on the day.

After competition sports massage is usually painful, but very beneficial due to lactic acid build up within your muscles (fatigue). Post event massage helps aid recover by improving circulation and reducing muscle tension.

What to wear to a Sports Massage?

Depending on what area you want treated it is always best to come with sports clothing and shorts if you want your legs massaged. For women please come in a standard bra if you would like your back worked on, gentlemen no bra will be fine.
