Muscle strains and tears

Muscle Strains and Tears

Muscle strains can also be referred to as a muscle pull, a muscle tear, or a complete rupture, which refers to damage to muscle fibres or its attaching tendons. Muscle tears are graded between Grade 1 to 3, Grade 3 being the most severe.

Undue pressure can be put upon the muscle by one sudden movement, or a minor strain, which has progressively got worse by being left untreated. For example; during normal daily activities, sudden heavy lifting, overstretching during sports, or a sudden impact.

The tearing of the muscle causes damage to the small blood vessels causing local bleeding, or bruising, and pain caused by irritation of the nerve endings in the area.

Symptoms of Muscle Strains and Tears

Symptoms for muscle strains include but are not limited to:

  • Swelling and bruising (bruising occurs in more severe cases)
  • Heat around the injured area
  • A throbbing pain or pain on stretch
  • Pain using the muscle
  • Weakness of the muscle or tendons
  • Inability to use the muscle at all

Treatment for Muscle Strains and Tears

Here at Savage Sports Therapy we will conduct a thorough review of your past medical history in terms of injury and also talk about how your current injury happened.

Based on how recently you injured the muscle (we call this stages of healing) we will devise a treatment plan best suited to what stage of healing your muscle is currently in. Generally if the muscle has been injured in the early stages (0-72hrs) we will always advise early management with ice packs. Please note: cover the ice pack with a protective covering to avoid ice burn to the skin.

Other treatments for muscle strain/ruptures will include soft tissue massage, ultrasound, taping and exercise education to help you return to daily living activities as early as possible.
